Iwate University and Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research (EIAR) signed a joint research agreement in 2022 to develop cold-tolerant and disease-resistant rice varieties through crossbreeding between “Hitomebore,” a major cold-tolerant variety in the Tohoku region, and “X-Jigna,” a major variety in Ethiopia’s Fogera Plain. Ethiopian researchers from EIAR’s Fogera National Rice Research Training Center (FNRRTC) participating in the joint research will visit Iwate Prefecture from July 22 to August 1 to undergo training in rice breeding.
The seminar aims to introduce Ethiopia’s rice development, JICA’s technical cooperation, and the joint research conducted by Japanese and Ethiopian researchers, with the goal of promoting further collaboration between Japan and Ethiopia.
